"Principal dancer and icon Larissa Ponomarenko is retiring from the stage after 18 years with the company. In her new role as Ballet Master (sounds powerful, doesn’t it?) she will have the chance to channel her knowledge and grace to the next generation of dancers — through teaching, coaching and assisting with the production of upcoming performances." (....)

Congratulations, Larissa! What an exciting honor! And YES we most certainly agree that the title of "Ballet Master" sounds deliciously powerful indeed! ;) Read all about Ponomarenko's new job title here.

  • A Beginner's Guide to Boston Ballet

Principal dancer Kathleen Breen Combes by Rosalie O'ConnorIf you're in the Boston area and new to the ballet {and let's face it, many Nutcracker attendees are!}, then check out this handy Beginner's Guide, courtesy of Boston University. "The version of The Nutcracker that the Boston Ballet stages is choreographed by the company’s Finnish artistic director Mikko Nissinen. It stays true to the original story and structure, but has more of a showy flair than more classical versions. Nissinen has been the artistic director since 2001 and is credited with rejuvenating the then-ailing company, adding a lot of contemporary works to the repertoire." Quote: BU Quad.com

Now here's something to get excited about!

"Just two years ago, facing a financial crunch, Boston Ballet laid off staff and reduced the main company from 50 to 41. Artistic director Mikko Nissinen said the aim was to operate short-staffed for two years in order to regroup and pay off debt, then build the company back up.

“We did two to three rounds of trimming on every possible front,’’ Nissinen said recently by phone. “We cleaned out our debt royally, and moved our financial picture to a very good place.’’ This season, working on a budget of $24 million-$25 million, the main company roster is back up to 47, and further additions are planned over the next few years." ~ Quote Boston.com
